1998 Ford 4X4 - 4.6L AT Lockup Conv Problem

HELLO,
I HAVE A 1998 FORD 4X4 WITH STOCK ENGINE TRANS. IT HAS PROBLEM BEING SMOOTH AT 35-40 MPH. IT SEEMS TO BE KICKING IN AND OUT OF THE LOCK UP TORQUE CONVERTOR : . THE FIX WAS IN THE OLD DAYS A SWITH CONTROLLING THE LOCK UP TORQUE CONVERTOR ON GM CARS, IS THIS THE SAME PROBLEM?

Have you watched the lock up on the scanner

Chose custom data list on your scanner and only watch lock up and brake switch status. Had a bad brake switch cause this a few times. Watch tps too. IDK what kind of scan tool you have, but on my Snap-on if you chose only one or two items it displays faster.

does it do it if you drive it in 3rd not over drive?

This is typical of the speed the computer commands O/D. Watch for commanded gear and actual gear. If it is the trans the actual gear will be different from commanded (I doubt this as you should have a code). I think you have a engine related or controller problem.
